How true is this quote from Doug Larson? If only we could magic our weeds into order so they become one with the planting design? Sadly, we can't, and so we must make sure we keep on top of this important task. And if you are a fan of the all natural approach, then read on as you don't have to employ the use of chemicals to get rid of them!
What type of weed is it?
The science behind weeding is important to know before you begin. Annual weeds (which only live for a year) and ephemeral weeds (which live for less than a year) are the easiest to control, as they are usually shallow rooted, but they scatter seeds prolifically, so usually reappear. Deep-rooted perennial weeds, which die down in the winter and re-grow each spring, will re-grow from their roots if the tops are removed or burned off, and so they are harder to remove. They can be hard to dig out and may grow up through weed barriers in time.
How do I get rid of it?
Effective ways to manually remove weeds from your garden include hoeing and hand-weeding with a garden fork. Hoeing is best done on a dry day with a light breeze, as the soil is dry so scattered seeds are more likely to dry out on the surface, rather than re-root in moist soil. Manually removing with a hand fork is easier in lighter soils and should be avoided if you could risk removing roots of other plants. You should try to remove the whole root to reduce the risk of the weed returning. You can get other tools more specific for weeding, such as a weed knife, which can be very effective for their particular purpose.
When should I weed my garden?
The best time to remove weeds is from spring onwards, yet you can put up weed barriers in late winter or early spring to try and keep them under control when they do grow. Mulching with bark or wood chip is an effective barrier; it works by smothering the established weeds with 10-15 cm deep of organic substance. Ensure you keep woody stems clear of mulching though, as they can rot. Edging boards can be useful to prevent invasive plants getting into borders, such as couch grass, a perennial grass that can spread rapidly.
Mechanical methods for weeding
You can also try repeatedly cutting the affected area with a strimmer or sickle-type weeder to weaken the weed and discourage it from growing. Flame guns can be used to scorch off weeds between paving slabs and on driveways, where they are particularly hard to remove. (Always consult a professional for advice if you haven't used a flame gun before.)
